E-type owner looking for a Gen 1 Liftback
Hi all
I just wanted to post to say a quick hello to everyone. As the title says I currently have a 1967 Series 1 Jaguar E-type but am looking to find it a stable mate in the form of a Gen 1 Celica Liftback. My E-type while a great car is a proper garage queen and doesn't get used as often as I would like so I am looking for a more usable classic and I thought a Celica could fit the bill as being something I could use more frequently and something a little different
I am based in the UK and currently looking for a Liftback so if anyone comes across any suitable cars or is considering selling theirs then please get in touch
Oh, here is a picture of the E-type. Sorry it's not a Toyota but I have owned 3 MKIV Supra's in the a past
Thanks
Trev

Re: E-type owner looking for a Gen 1 Liftback
Welcome, Trev.
That is a seriously sexy automobile you got.....
Getting a Liftback should not be too difficult, though it may take some time, as they do get more rare. If you don't mind a LHD, there are still a few available on the continent.
Anyway, good luck with the search, keep's informed.

Anyway, back to Earth..: Ebay, Autoscout, you name it. The internet is your friend, I got mine from Germany eight years ago.
I'ld help out, but I'm currently based in South Korea until the end of the year.
Good luck..!

You don't seem to be monitoring you other post. 3 cars here. At the rate they go for in the UK and the weak Canadian dollar. You could ship and still save substantially.

Re: E-type owner looking for a Gen 1 Liftback
Hi trev
Expect to pay £15k for a decent uk 28 lift back if you can find one. Must be gt with 18r-g twin cam engine as the st is underpowered and won't run on unleaded. You will have a search on as values are rising rapidly and the supply of decent uk cars is very limited. Might be sensible to import from Japan but with the Value of the yen against the pound increasing there might not be much in it. By the time you have taken shipping costs and import duty into account. Going to put my 28gt on the road next year as tax exempt , but must admit I prefer the coupe to drive but the lift back does have the looks. I am uk if I hear of one will post on here as I run the register for uk cars cheers Malcolm.

Re: E-type owner looking for a Gen 1 Liftback
Thanks Malcolm. I actually randomly spotted a ST in the background of another classified ad I was checking out so have contacted the owner and he said he might be willing to let the car go for £9k. It has the 18-R engine in which I've heard is a little on the slow side so could consider a possible engine swap at some point in the future. The car looks straight but not concourse but I just don't know if £9k is a good price. It probably needs £2-4k spent on it to sort out the paint etc but struggling to find any cars for sale to compare it to.1600gtcelica wrote:Hi trev

What would you price an ST at. It's an original UK car with 88k miles.
Thanks

Re: E-type owner looking for a Gen 1 Liftback
Please note: about 90hp from a 1.6 ST engine was not considered underpowered in that era. Curb weight is less than a ton. Further the 2T-B engine will happily accept unleaded, as it has an aluminium head. Official spec is 98 RON gasoline, but it will run fine on 95, as nowadays available in Europe. Back then the only alternative was 92,which is too low.
One could always shoehorn in a Lexus V8, if more power is required....... It has been done.
Oh, 9k is not too expensive for a rust free one with a decent interior.

Re: E-type owner looking for a Gen 1 Liftback
Hi Trev
Probably a fair price in view of the mileage , however the issue is its an ST , would need an upgrade to 18r-g , these engines are making £1000 an d then you have got to change it, Also over the gt the St has no close ratio gearbox, or limited slip diff , inferior interior and reduced specification. The secret is being patient, allow at least a couple of years to find one as there is so few of them about in the UK, and if needs paint and work then it will eat cash, so buy the best GT you can find, if you want to make contact my mobile no is 07975718146, as I run the register I know where most of them are.
cheers malcolm.

Hi Malcolm
Really useful info on both posts. I will try and give you a call this week as it would be good to have a quick chat with and ask a few questions. Also if you hear of any register members wanting to sell their cars then please keep me in mind

Re: E-type owner looking for a Gen 1 Liftback
Is that the main list of differences between the ST and GT models. There isn't a huge amount of info online so difficult to know exactly what I should be looking for. Also there are a whole host of model numbers RA28, RA29, TA27 etc it's all a bit of a maze for me. Is it an RA28 GT that I should hold out for?1600gtcelica wrote:Hi Trev

Re: E-type owner looking for a Gen 1 Liftback
I didn't think there were any LSD fitted 1st gen cars anywhere??? And gearboxes other than being 4 or 5 speed were the same(T or W) no matter what the trim level in my 40 year owner experience with these cars. But I'm still learning, and would like to know more. I'm really only familiar with the North American specs first hand.

As per Stepho's database http://members.iinet.net.au/~stepho/celprod.htm#cel28pr there were LB's with quite a variety of engines, boxes and diffs, including a few LSD's.neil reid wrote:I didn't think there were any LSD fitted 1st gen cars anywhere???
