thanks pete. so my options are to either build a 22r/20r hybrid and swap in a v8 later, or just bite the bullet and go for the long haul now. i can get a 1uz for 500.. but i want a 5 speed and i hear the adaptor is super expensive for the bellhousing. im sure with more searching i could find the ans...
